The Black Bears were born out of the many years of teaching and Varsity hockey coaching of Coach Alex Moody.  Alex taught at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minnesota, Berkshire School in Western Massachusetts and Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts. The idea to choose the University of Maine mascot and school colors comes from the deep respect Coach Moody had for one specific student-athlete.  That student-athlete received a full athletic scholarship from the University of Maine Black Bears.  Former Black Bear player Paul Lynch, who tragically passed away while playing professional hockey, is eternally remembered with the formation of the Middlesex Black Bears.

Paul played for Coach Moody while at Brooks School.  The connection to the Maine Black Bears continued with scholarship player and Pennsylvania native Cliff Loya. The Black Bears have a simple philosophy Coach Moody learned and adopted when working with former Head Coach of the Los Angles Kings, Andy Murray.  “Success is a result when preparation meets opportunity”.  This holds true in the classroom, in every day life and on the ice.  This simple philosophy is a tenet of the Middlesex Black Bears, and is instilled in every student-athlete to wear the uniform.
